Taiwan President to Donate Salary for Ukraine Humanitarian Relief

Taiwan President Support for Ukraine

Taipei (March 2, 2022) — Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen announced that she, Vice President William Lai, and Premier Su Tseng-chang would each donate one month’s salary to support humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine amid Russia’s military invasion.

The pledge was made during a meeting of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), where Tsai expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people and praised their resilience. The donations are intended to assist humanitarian organizations providing relief to civilians affected by the conflict.

Taiwan has also delivered approximately 27 tonnes of medical supplies to Ukraine and joined international sanctions against Russia, despite having limited direct trade ties with Moscow.

President Tsai emphasized Taiwan’s support for democracy and freedom, calling on government officials and citizens to contribute to relief initiatives. Authorities established a dedicated donation account through Taiwan’s disaster relief organizations to channel public contributions toward humanitarian assistance and refugee support.

The move is widely viewed as a symbolic demonstration of Taiwan’s alignment with democratic partners worldwide, particularly at a time when Taiwan itself faces increasing diplomatic and security pressure from China.
